Black Walnut Bangle Bracelet
This is a wooden bangle bracelet I carved back in the late 1980s from a plank of black walnut wood. The pattern was traced onto the plank, then sawn out and carved with Sureform rasps and sanded smooth. Clear nitrocellulose Deft finish. Small hole in apex for mounting a charm.
Tai Chi Sword
My standard issue Tai Chi Sword. It is mine, forever, and none shall possess this living entity.
The Angel Psychosiel and Wm J Remski
I carved this by drawing an Escheresque Angel onto a plank of Prunus serotina, ~2″ thick and sawing it out with a sabresaw. Then I carved it with chisels and mallets and made a beautiful wall ornament. Hangs on small finish nail through any stud on almost any wall. Of course, the Holy Angel Psychosiel has a hole in her head, just like me.
Surf Stallion
Surf Stallion is carved from black walnut, Juglans nigra, that came from a tree that grew up the road from my home. The tree was felled around 1978, and the piece was carved in 1986. I began by roughing out a log with gouges and mallet, then used rotary tools to carve and finish the horse to final form. It is finished in nitrocellulose Deft, and sits on the rough base of the log from which it was sculpted.
Leaf Ascending
Leaf Ascending is a hardwood carving of a butterfly rising from a coca leaf I made around 1988, in the winter, in my basement. It is carved from the wood of an old Prunus serotina, or black cherry, tree that grew in front of my home and was felled by the county when they widened the road back around 1978. The wood was milled into 4″ x 4″ stock, from which a billet was cut and then carved directly into the seasoned wood with Stanley knife and X-acto scorp. Hand sanded to smoothness and then finished with nitrocellulose Deft.
Leaf Ascending was given as a gift to a young lady named Lexi who works at my local apothecary shop, because she is a writer and I know she values beauty. This piece will remain with me in memory, and I hope it will always be valued by whomever holds possession of it.
Triskelion Crystal
Triskelion Crystal is string art, made with gold metallic thread woven into perforated illustration board painted black with India ink. A subtle image displaying extra dimensions that changes with the angle of lighting and observation.
